Now THAT ought to be a short program

Forget Lieberman-Warner. This is my e-mail of the day. I got a release from S.C. ETV saying that on "This Week in the House with Speaker Bobby Harrell,"

... Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell will host  Rep. Jim Merrill, House Majority Leader, and Rep. Harry Ott, House Minority Leader, as they discuss this Session's accomplishments...

I'm sort of guessing they're going to drag out the introductions, greetings and sign-off, because they certainly won't have any other content.

How many years combined "experience" do those guys have? What would we do without their selfless leadership?

Brad – They’ve adjourned, that’s the welcomed news, reason enough to celebrate. We can let our kids out of the house to play, women can again walk around downtown without fear of being accosted, shepherds can graze their flocks closer to Columbia, lobbyists can dry out and catch up on their sleep.

True, the expensive restaurants and “gentleman’s” clubs will see their sales plummet, but for most folks the departure of our legislature will spell R-E-L-I-E-F: another session complete without serious damage.

I wish we'd adopt a system like Texas: Doesn't their legislature only meet once every two years? No more bang for the buck than we get from our legislature, I'd say once every two years would be plenty. David

Mike, wait until the end of the day Thursday to give the all-clear to the shepherds. They're not gone yet.

David, you may be right that for no more good than they do, they could do it in half the time. But they don't do nearly enough, Mike C's libertarian sensibilities aside. If I thought it would lead to sensible legislation of the sort to which our lawmakers seem to be allergic, I'd keep them in session permanently...

"But they don't do nearly enough"

Brad, I think the problem with that is we don't have any way of making them only do more of what we want done. I'm kind of horrified thinking what the state would look like if the legislature had a higher productivity rate in general.

More laws, more taxes, more Big Brother. The Warthen prescription would cure the common cold by burdening the healthy so much a cold would feel good by comparison.

"Harrison Bergeron." "Brazil." Warthen.
